Relaxed Dental Visits

Dentists and Dental Hygienists

Please Note:  Important message!

Through headphones, while in the dental chair,
dental patients use Relaxed Dental Visits
audio CDs.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Relaxed Dental Visits relaxation program is meant to be played in dental offices/surgeries only through a patient’s personal headphones. The relaxation audio program CDs intentionally provide effective methods of deep relaxation and may induce deep relaxation in you and your office staff.  Never drive, or operate ANY kind of machinery (including dental tools), while listening to hypnosis or self-hypnosis programs.

Benefits for Dentists

Dentist Info:  This program includes self-hypnosis information and relaxation.  Suggestions include increased benefit of the topical gel's numbing effect, and offers relaxed breathing and focusing techniques to use before and during the injection.  (Special note to Dentist - For the patient to benefit and feel prepared for the injection, the patient must listen to audio tape for SIX minutes before the patient receives the injection!)

How can you help your patient to feel prepared, safe,

and in control while in your chair?

These seven simple steps suggest ways you can help your patients start relaxing early on, and keep relaxing during their appointments with you:

  1. Dental patients look to you as an 'Authority figure', giving extra weight to the words you speak.  Patients (including very intelligent people) can experience 'brain fog' caused by the chemical surge of their autonomic fight or flight response to fear/anxiety.  Explaining procedures in clear and simple terms may enable them to ask the questions which can help them to feel more secure and relaxed.

  2. Speaking with your patient before the audio program begins helps your patient to feel prepared, and feel more in control.  Clarify the steps of the dental procedure the patient requires including if, or how many injection(s) will be necessary.

  3. Review with your patient the three hand signals used within Relaxed Dental Visits -
           1.   patient's hand held palm up near mouth means - STOP! Pause now, please!
           2.   tapping on the patient's shoulder means you wish to talk with him/her
           3.   tapping on the patient's chin means you would like him/her to relax his/her
                   mouth wider open, once again.

(Once your patient begins listening to the audio program, the patient will close his/her eyes.  With eyes closed, your patient attention may be focused deeply elsewhere.  A reply may be delayed, or you may need to repeat a question.)

  4. Apply topical analgesic and leave on the patient's gums for a minimum of three minutes, as per manufacturer's instructions, to achieve the maximum physical and mental numbing effects.  Within the program the patient hears a suggestion to notice today, the greatly increased numbing effects of the topical analgesic.

  5. Clarify details about any injection while you are administering the topical analgesic is very helpfully reduces patient apprehension.  When you clearly explain about the injection in advance, you allow the patient to remain listening, undisturbed, to the audio program, DURING the injection itself.  Allowing the patient to continue listening to the program during the injection results in noticeably reducing patient anxiety.  When it's time to give the injection touch a patient's shoulder, just to check that he/she feels comfortable and ready.  With patient's eyes still closed, say something like: "If you feel ready now, just nod your head, and open your mouth."  "It is just fine for you to keep your eyes closed, and remain relaxed, while you continue listening to the CD."  This type of calm 'leading' talk helps reduce worries and fears.

  6. PLEASE TIME IT! - SIX MINUTE INJECTION DELAY REQUIRED!  Wait SIX minutes from when the patient begins listening to the program before administering the injection.  (THIS IS KEY TO THE PATIENT FEELING SAFE AND ABLE TO COPE EFFECTIVELY WITH FEAR OR ANXIETY re: INJECTIONS!  At 5 min 30 seconds the dental patient has progressed to the slow deep breathing technique to use THROUGHOUT THE INJECTION.)  If the patient loses focus during the injection, say something reassuring like, "That's all done.  You can just close your eyes and relax now".

After completing your patient's dental work, tap him/her on the shoulder, signaling the dental work's completion.  (As appropriate, you can advise when the next appointment should be booked, or your patient may have a question for you.)

  7. Give your patient a sense of completion and wellbeing by beginning the final audio track for him/her, before he/she leaves the dental chairSay something simple like... "I look forward to seeing you next visit.  To complete your audio session, just listen to this three minute closing track.  After the closing track completes, please come out to the reception desk.  Enjoy these last few minutes for yourself, listening to these encouraging, refreshing, uplifting thoughts.

You can increase your patient's relaxation focus -

To assist your patient in benefiting from the relaxation within the audio program, keep conversations to a minimum.  Remember after speaking with your patient, that you can assist him/her in relaxing quickly once again, by stating...  "If you close your eyes, and inhale and exhale slowing a few times now...  you can feel relaxed again, very quickly."

Dentists and Dental Hygienists: While providing expert dental care for your patients, have you personally noticed or dealt with these  challenges? ?

  • patients (often using excuses) fearfully avoiding booking or keeping appointments.

  • you compassionately care about your patients, and you provide modern painless dental care.  However, are you seen as or associated with someone who heartlessly inflicts pain?

  • fearful patients delay quality dental care intending to avoid pain.  Patients may be overlooking the fact that delaying dental care causes more pain, more expense, and the need to perform more complicated procedures.

  • We understand why patients avoid early or preventative dental care... past unpleasant dental experiences haunt them.

  • patients feel guilty after practising poor dental hygiene, and become consumed with fear, expecting to hear personal criticism.

  • you do challenging and meticulous work- perfectly performing a technical procedure identically with each patient can still produce variable results.  Patient's DNA, sensitivity levels, history of nutrition, physical oral health, and tooth strength or softness, all effect your work.

  • patients bring their personal and dental fears, worries and stresses to your office - and share them with you!

  • your work would be more enjoyable if your white knuckle patients could 'relax'

  • patients sometimes remain focused on useless past painful dental experiences.  They associate these memories with you.

  • you feel powerless, unable to assist all your patients in reducing their anxieties.

  • your patients feel vulnerable, immobilized, or 'out of control' - triggered by dental sights, smell and sounds which feel unfamiliar, unwanted, and outside their 'comfort zone'.
